Sandmasters are the [[unnatural]] inspiration behind stories of genies. They have an elemental mastery of sand; able to attack with living sandstorms or form it into palaces at will; and they also have a kind of telepathic illusion: they can shape sand into anything you can imagine, and make it seem completely real. But they have no imagination themselves, and so can only create things they've actually seen unless there's a human there to do the imagining. They often appear to people lost in the desert, offering a banquet at an oasis, or a mysterious palace hundreds of miles from civilisation.

These feasts taste completely real, and a sandmaster can gain sustenance from it (though their energy actually comes from the spiritual energy of the person who imagined each item for them). As for the people who join them for dinner… the meal tastes great (if a little dry), and the wine is refreshing, but as far as nutrition and health is concerned, they've been eating and drinking sand.

One of the most powerful [[unnatural]] races, avatars were the inspiration for several myths including djinn (jointly with [[trickster]]s) and dryads.

An avatar is what happens when the collective mind/soul of an ecosystem (usually a forest) incarnates to take on a mortal form in order to defend their home. They are powerful, but completely alien. They have no self-image or sense of identity, as they are effectively the mouthpiece of an intangible committee. However, if an avatar remains incarnate for long enough and studies human behaviour, they may start to take on human traits. The only known case of this is [[Leslie]]'s [[mother]], who was able to fall in love with a [[mundane]], and abandoned her responsibilities to the forest in order to live as a human.

==Abilities==

* Avatars can sense the flow of life energy around them. This means that they can:
** Look at someone and know if that person is going to die soon (and even know the time with reasonable accuracy) if the impending death is due to natural causes ("simply running out of life")
** Sense the presence of any living creature around them
** Recognise all [[unnatural]]s and immediately know someone's type
** Interact with [[ghost]]s
* Avatars can also protect themselves by sharing any injury they suffer with the ecosystem that created them. In the case of the forest, this means that an injury can be passed on to a tree, allowing the avatar to survive and recover from any injury that one of the trees in their environment could survive.
** They often have a 'heart tree' which takes the brunt of the damage, but this can then be passed on to other trees. If the heart tree is a giant oak with a trunk six feet thick, the avatar could walk away from being shot or hit by a truck, and inside an hour the damage would be distributed between a hundred trees.
** Ways to injure an avatar are:
*** Destroy the forest and/or the heart tree before fighting them
*** Set fire to the heart tree, which prevents it passing injury on to other trees as long as the fire burns
**** Note that this can be done by setting the avatar on fire; if they pass the fire on to their heart tree, it means that any further injuries they sustain can only be shared between two bodies. Most avatars would instinctively allow themselves to burn rather than hurting the tree.
*** Hit them with a single injury sufficient to kill the heart tree. Depending on the tree, this may be incredibly difficult. It's possible that a lightning strike could be sufficient, or a collapsing building.
**** It is not possible to cut down the mightiest tree in the forest with a herring. Don't even try.
*** Poison might work, if you can find a poison that works on trees.

They are naturally stronger, faster, smarter, and more sadistic than humans, although there's still variation within the race.

When 'awakened' by trauma, meditation, or by being targetted by another drinker, they can become drinkers in their own right. This is the source of the legend about a vampire's bite being able to change a human into a vampire. In reality this only works on munchkins, who may or may not know that their true parents were also drinkers.

Notable drinkers in the series include [[Erik]]; although he later became [[mundane]].

For this reason, most [[hunter]]s are careful not to use the word "vampire"; it could lead to them doing silly things.

The most prominent drinker in the series is [[Brad]], but we also see him learning from a couple of mentors: [[Marnivelo Moonchild Rosenthal]] and [[Lady Meredith]].

[[Stef]] is climbing on a gantry of some kind, hanging by her fingertips. She's trying to reach a junction box that isn't working properly. She gets to it while observers below hold their breath, but had dropped her wrench so tries punching it instead.

Her phone rings, she is distracted and falls. She grabs a cable in a desperate attempt to stop herself, and jerks the faulty junction box a few inches away from the beam it was attached to; the shock makes the lighting rig come on, but also makes Stef lose her grip again.

Her safety harness catches her, and [[Pete]] (among others) helps her down, telling her she's crazy and reckless. It seems that Pete is in a play because a friend from his course at uni thought he'd be a perfect fit for the role.

Unsure if this will lead to Stef finding out more about the vampires.

He sees a pattern in some reports that – to him – indicates [[drinker]] activity, and makes a mental note before returning to analysing a string of thefts that he's officially supposed to be working on.

When he gets a break, Adam sends a text message to [[Lucas]], assuming that if it needs dealing with urgently, Lucas and [[Stef]] could deal with the case. He has an urge to go out and do something, but knows that he can better fight the [[unnatural]]s by keeping his job, so they have access to police systems.

Includes a bit of a refresher on unnaturals, drinkers (and why they're not vampires), and the [[New Inquisition]].

Adam is too introspective here; it doesn't suit him. And the whole scene reads like a block of exposition. I think this needs replacing with something else.

[[Leslie]]'s boss, [[Becker]], calls her into his office. She's startled; knows she should have been working but keeps imagining fire. First hint of her phobia.

Leslie is worried she might be fired. She's been working here two months, which means the honeymoon period is over and she's expected to know all the rules.

Becker says that two police officers came in that morning, and were asking about Leslie. She says she has no idea why. The police have a file on her an inch thick, but he didn't see what was in it. He's suspicious, and wants to know if she's got a criminal record she's been lying about.

Leslie is very defensive. Says she's not a criminal and then panics and tells him to stay out of her business, angry and scared. Becker is taken aback, but unexpectedly reasonable. He says he'll be asking for a background check to confirm that she's being honest, but aside from criminal activity he just wants to know she's not going to have a breakdown or something in work.

Leslie says that she doesn't even remember most of what's behind her problems, just that she has nightmares about fire and hearing that she'd been so close. She's not sure if Becker is going to have a problem with her going out drinking the night before work, or if he's trying to be sympathetic. He offers her a day off, but she's not sure if it's a trap, so says she feels she should go back to work to take her mind off it.

Leslie returns to work. It seems she's got a backlog of work. She doesn't like this part of the job, when it's just her and her computer. There's some details about her job here.

At afternoon break time, [[Rhiannon]] comes to talk to Leslie. She's worried, hadn't seen her since last night. Leslie says she went outside for some air and saw a guy she wanted to talk to. Rhi makes different assumptions, and Leslie says that she went home after that, feeling unwell.

Leslie says she's not coming out tonight, and she can't talk about why. Rhi assumes it's about the guy, Leslie isn't really sure. She knows there's something she needs to do but isn't sure what. Confirmation again that she doesn't remember all the bad stuff from her past.

[[Leslie]] arrives at work, having managed to get herself in a more presentable state. [[Jasmine]] is working on the front desk, also a little hung over. Asks where Leslie got to. They got separated.

Jas mentions something that was in the newspapers, and says they were worried because they didn't know where Leslie was. Some talking at cross-purposes, because Leslie initially assumes they were talking about the Collins article.

The news said to check up on any friends who were on [[Clayton Street]] that night, but gives no real details. The police have cordoned off a street, but the reporters are just guessing why. Jas's friend [[Maxime]] claims to have seen it before they put the barriers up; it looked like there had been a huge fire in an alleyway, walls blackened, and [[Tara]] (a friend of a friend) said they'd found charred pieces of bones.

Jas also urges Leslie to clock in soon, as [[Robert Becker]] (their immediate manager) is "on the warpath".

Leslie tries to forget everything else and just work, but she's on the edge of a panic attack because of her previous experiences.

She taught [[Leslie]] when she was younger. She insisted on the name "Sister Catharine"; wouldn't tolerate just "Sister", or "Catharine", or "Miss". ==Flashback==

[[Leslie]] is in a classroom, with [[Sister Catharine]] teaching. She scolds Leslie for not paying attention, says "I know where you came from". Some introduction to the nuns and the orphans they care for. Leslie is a new girl, and isn't used to the place yet.

Leslie was looking out of the window at [[Sister Agnes]], who had just returned from hospital. She isn't well, and Leslie knows she is going to die. Leslie silently prays for her, but thoughts reveal she's unsure of her faith.

Leslie gets punished, but doesn't remember the details. It's revealed that she knew the old nun was going to die, and that she has some kind of gift, but that she has had to learn not to tell anyone.

Angel:

* [[Leslie]] wakes up, regretting how many cocktails she drank last night. Mention that she'd been out with [[Jasmine]] and [[Rhiannon]], but had lost both of them at some point. They'd been to multiple clubs. Jas had been drinking heavily because of a breakup. Leslie isn't sure if she was just there out of sympathy, or if there was something she'd been trying to put out of her mind as well.

* She's hungover, and feeling bruised. Last night is a jumbled blur of memories. Promises herself that she's going to cut down on drinking, but implied she's unlikely to follow through on that.

* Brief reminiscence. Comparing [[Adam]] (a fighter) to [[Brad]] (a sadist). Some detail about what happened with Brad; and a reminder that Leslie doesn't want to remember it.

* Leslie gets coffee, feels better quickly. Then turns on the TV to see that [[Collins]] has dies. Finds out his name, and a little about him. Worries, and tries to reassure herself that she is "a normal person", leading into the flashback [[../Scene 3]].
